Senior Awards 2007

One very unique aspect of Magnolia Heights is the way the school, faculty, and administration honors its student body.  When students excel in whatever challenge they face in school then MHS is honored to publicly recognize the accomplishment(s) in more than a few awards ceremonies.  Thursday evening  MHS held its Senior Awards ceremony.  This ceremony is for the academic achievements that the seniors fulfill during their senior final year as a student of Magnolia Heights.  Since MHS is a college preparatory school, these accomplishments are very important - they are the groundwork to a successful college education.  This year the hard work of the senior class has earned them a record percentage of scholarships.  A record eighty-nine percent of MHS seniors have been offered college scholarships totaling over $950,000 as of May 10th.

That number is likely to go higher as more scholarships are offered after awards night.

Members of the Class of 2008 are ready to take the leadership role of the student body when the Class of 2007 is dismissed for the final time Friday afternoon.  The only thing they need is a lesson on forming "08" with their hands.

Members of the Class of 2008 prepare for Senior Awards night and the passing of the candle ceremony to say goodbye to the Class of 2007.

A special award was presented to Coach Jim Patterson Friday afternoon during the athletic awards ceremony.  Coach will be turning over the reins of the girls basketball program to other capable hands and focusing on his new administrative position within MHS.  He was presented with a (rather lengthy) school proclamation and a (rather heavy) trophy with the records of all teams he coached in his 26 years on the MHS sidelines.  He was also presented with a very long and heartfelt standing ovation from all in attendance.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to MHS student Nathan Moore.  Nathan and his brother Stephen were involved in an automobile  accident Saturday night in which Nathan was seriously injured.  He is in ICU at a Columbus hospital.

Monday 12:15PM - Nathan is out of ICU as of 11:30AM and in a private room.  Therapy will start today to get him back to walking and he should leave the hospital in less than a week.  He should be able to walk on his own in about six weeks.  He has assorted breaks and dislocations but seemed to be in good spirits on the phone.

His family and Ali Grace have asked for your prayers this Sunday evening and in the coming days.

Friday was the senior's final full regular day of high school and they started saying their goodbyes to the people who have been daily fixtures in their MHS experience.  A scene that occurred Friday in front of the student body was the seniors, as a group, left the tables and said their goodbyes to Skye Westmoreland and the rest of the kitchen staff - bringing many seniors and kitchen workers to tears.  Some may say it was because the seniors will miss the cinnamon rolls and biscuits and gravy for break when they are cooking for themselves next semester in college, but we all know it is because Skye treats the students (and even some of the staff) like her own kids.  And Friday the seniors publicly returned the love.  Once again it shows that in many respects MHS students are more of a big family rather than just a collection of students.

The above pictures shows the gamut of emotions that the seniors exhibit during a recent photo shoot.  It should be noted that the above pictures are actually different faces from the same picture (shown here).
