Pictures and Honors...
(Archive from May 1st, 2008)
When people think of the a collection of students, they may unintentionally try to separate them by academic grades. The only goal this may accomplish is to separate them by age. At MHS, this method of classification is usually not valid because the students are also part of many diverse groups that coexist in the student population. Proof of this is in the above picture taken this spring. Students who are less than two weeks from graduation are standing next to students who do not even hold a driver's license. The notion that age is a wide chasm that separates grades is not always true on the Hill. This group is just one of the many hundreds of groups who have been photographed for the 2007-2008 yearbook. This picture was taken this past week to commemorate and honor the many, many different organizations that students can, and do, belong to at MHS. Each group, regardless of membership, understands that they are part of an ever larger group that includes other students and teachers that eventually make up an even larger group called Magnolia Heights. And to its credit, the administration of Magnolia Heights makes quite an effort to recognize and honor these organizations. This effort reaches its pinnacle in the next two weeks.
Starting this week, MHS will once again begin the tradition of honoring these students and the groups in which they belong. Many ceremonies have been planned to put these students in the spotlight and let the world know that we, as a school and as individuals, are proud of the work they have done over the last year. The calendar is already beginning to bustle with ceremonies starting this week.
Friday is Athletic Awards Day. All high school athletes will be honored Friday afternoon in a ceremony in Troutt Hall. This is just a miniscule payback for the dedication that they have given to the MHS athletic department and a chance to show how proud the MHS family is for all the time and effort they have given in the pursuit of athletic excellence. We proudly honor those who choose to wear the school colors on the fields of competition. Afterwards, on Friday evening, another ceremony for the junior high will be held in Troutt Hall. In addition to honoring the younger Chiefs for their accomplishments, MHS will host a dance so these youngster Chiefs will be able to show their moves off the athletic fields. These youngsters are the future of MHS athletics and this is the least the MHS family can do to honor the these young athletes. And we, as a school and as a family, look forward to the bright days ahead for Magnolia Heights. There are some truly special days in our future on the playing field.

Dr. Cary Mettetal took time out of his busy schedule to visit the kindergarten in Mini-Mag to read and talk to the youngsters about just any and everything. We want to thank Cary, along with the many other guest speakers over the past year, for taking the time to become actively involved with the students of MHS.
Webmaster's Personal Note: On Tuesday, three school days after the above picture was taken, I had the opportunity to see members of the MHS speech class read books to the elementary students in the Adair Media Center. The sights of that day brought me back to the days when I had the opportunity to listen to the upperclassmen (and women) read aloud to us - way back in the mid 70's. The words spoken by those students, students who were our heroes and who we strived to emulate so long ago, were so special that they still have an effect on what is printed on this website to this very day. A second grader feels very special when a cheerleader, the person voted "Most Athletic" or any of the older students visits the classroom, and it is so nice to see that tradition is still continued in the MHS classrooms today. These people were our heroes.
But sometimes even heroes may hit a bump in the road of life and, sadly, the MHS family is no exception. One of our own heroes, Kathy Hopper Haynes (Class of 1977), has hit one of those bumps and is now in need of our prayers. She is about to have a marrow transplant from her younger brother Richard, and hopefully she will be much better in the near future. We pray for success in her upcoming treatments and we want her family to know that the MHS family is thinking of her.
And included in the family is a certain webmaster who heard her read "The Velveteen Rabbit" (story synopsis included in the link) to an eager second grade class. Kathy, we wish you Godspeed and know that you are "REAL" to a great many of us. Kathy's story and updates can be read here. |
