The Beginning of the End...
The headline above sounds rather odd this close to the start of the school year, but it is true for one of the athletic teams on campus. Wednesday was the last regular season home game for the Lady Chiefs softball team and they won the undisputed (and undefeated) North AAA conference championship by defeating Oak Hill 2-0. And in case you are not aware, the girls are having a tremendous season so far with a record of 22-2. The two losses are the fewest of any MPSA school this year since Bayou lost three games this past weekend (that information is unconfirmed) and have not lost since Aug 18th when they dropped two one run exposition games to Prep and Indianola. They are the #1 seed in the North "AAA" tournament, which they will be hosting Wednesday and next Saturday. So even though their postseason is long from being over, the days of playing softball on campus are numbered for several longtime Lady Chiefs.
On a lighter note, the ladies brought home the Carroll Tournament trophy this weekend, which is proudly being displayed on the black desk. MHS won five straight games in the tournament with the final game a 2-1 win over a very spirited and talented North Delta team. The young ladies had their hands full and won the game in extra innings without allowing ND to score under international rules - the softball equivalent of a goal line stand. This tournament also provided a look into the future of MHS softball when two youngsters started in place of a senior in the final game. Ashley Hitt and Summer Steakley were tapped to start in place of the stalwart third baseman Heather Suddoth in the championship game and earned some quality playing experience that will benefit the team for years to come. Some of the hundreds of pictures of the tournament, taken by Carol Smith, can be seen here.
Congrats to the MHS cheer teams for a second place finish in the state competition.

It is hard to believe that school has only been in session for a month and a "Senior Spotlight" is about to begin for these five young women. Wednesday afternoon was their last regular season home game proudly wearing the colors of Magnolia Heights. As a family, we thank Kristina Austin, Kara Benson, Amber Chambers, Anne Marie Hitt and Heather Suddoth for the strength and fortitude that they have displayed in their many years of MHS fast pitch participation and for being honor students in the classroom. Later this year more information about their future plans will be published here before graduation, but for the moment we just want to thank them for the blood, sweat, and tears they have given while wearing the uniform of a Chief. They will play at home during the North Half tournament one last time before forever leaving the confines of the MHS softball playing field. Thank You, girls, and Good Luck in all of your future endeavors!!!! ************************************************** | |
